Getting paid as a one-person company
Selling from a store
Shopify is a hosted store: product pages, checkout, payments (Shopify Payments where it is available, otherwise a third-party gateway), shipping labels, point of sale, and digital downloads through an app. You are the seller, so the tax settings are yours to configure.
Taking payments on your own site or app
Stripe takes card and wallet payments on a site or app: hosted Checkout pages, Payment Links that need no code, invoices, subscriptions and a full API. You are the merchant of record, so registering for and remitting sales tax or VAT is your job; Stripe Tax can calculate and collect it.
Letting someone else be the seller
Paddle is a merchant of record for software and digital products: Paddle is the seller on the buyer's receipt, collects and remits sales tax and VAT worldwide, and handles refunds and chargebacks. Your customers pay Paddle, and Paddle pays you.
Holding and moving money in several currencies
A Wise business account gives you local account details in several currencies, converts between them at the mid-market rate plus a stated fee, and comes with a debit card. Wise is not a bank; check how balances are protected in your country.
Which problem do you have?
- Physical goods or a catalogue: a store.
- Your own site or app, or subscriptions: a payments API.
- Software sold worldwide and no wish to file tax in every country: a merchant of record.
- Invoices paid from other countries: a multi-currency account.
Many one-person companies use two of the four.
